Presented by the Modern Quilt Guild, QuiltCon is the largest modern quilting show of its kind in the world. It takes place in February at different venues in the USA . Each year, thousands of attendees come to see over 550 modern quilts on display, including 360 juried in from MQG members around the world.
Founded in LA in 2009 by Alissa Haight Carlton & Latifah Saafir the Modern Quilt Guild developed out of the thriving online community of modern quilters. MQG is now has over 14,000 members and more than 200 guilds around the world. In 2013, they hosted the first QuiltCon.
The growth of the movement was facilitated by four factors: the cultural shift of quality design being recognized by the general public, affordable digital cameras, the changing fabric industry and the rise of social media.
Their mission is to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education & community. www.themodernquiltguild.com
A modern quilt is WHAT ???
Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design.
Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt.
- the use of bold colours and prints
- high contrast and graphic areas of solid color
- improvisational piecing
- expansive negative space
- alternate grid work
‘Modern traditionalism’ or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.
