Quilt Categories for entering the South African National Quilt Competition 2019

 

Bed Quilts

1) Appliquéd and Pieced Bed Quilts
• No side shorter than 130cm and no side longer than 250cm.
• Pieced quilts, with or without appliqué, that are constructed using traditional techniques and materials.
• Appliquéd quilts, with or without piecing, that are constructed using traditional techniques and materials.
• The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. The quilt cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern.
• Whole-cloth bed quilts should be entered in this category.

Wall Quilts
2) Wall Quilts – Pictorial
• No side shorter than 30cm and no side longer than 200cm.
• Quilts that are a depiction/representation of persons, places and/or things. The representation can be realistic or stylised.
• Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
• The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. The quilt cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern.

3) Wall Quilts – using Organic and/or Geometric Shapes
• No side shorter than 30cm and no side longer than 200cm.
• Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
• The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. The quilt cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern.
a) Standard (WQS)
b) Masters (WQM)

4) Wall Quilts – Art Quilt / Fibre Art
• No side shorter than 30cm and no side longer than 200cm.
• Quilts that are made primarily of fibre/cloth.
• Any technique or combination of techniques can be used and any other materials/media can be included.
• Some quilting/stitching through three layers must be included.
• The quilt must be your own design.

5) Open
The Open category is for quilts that meet the stipulated requirements below.
• No side longer than 250cm.
• The quilts must not violate copyright laws.
• Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
The following quilts can be entered:
Quilts constructed and quilted by an individual AND
• made using a published/commercial pattern or
• made using computer-digitized quilting or
• made using machine embroidery patterns or
• have been started in a class or
• be a replica of an antique quilt (made approximately before 1960) or
• made from non-quilted traditional techniques ( such as Yo-yo’s, Cathedral Window, Mola etc).

6) Collaborative Quilts
• No side longer than 250cm.
• A quilt that is constructed (designed, pieced, appliquéd, quilted, embellished or finished) by two or three individuals.
• Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
• Important: No participating quilter can enter more than four (4) quilts into the competition, whether as an individual in the Bed, Wall, Open and/or any other individual category or as part of a collaborative/group (including Collaborative Quilts, Group Quilts or Community Quilts).

7) Group Quilts
• No side longer than 250cm.
• Quilts made by four (4) or more actively involved people.
• Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
• Group quilts must be a design of one or more of the group members, or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work.
• Important: No participating quilter can enter more than four (4) quilts into the competition, whether as an individual in the Bed, Wall, Open and/or any other individual category or as part of a collaborative/group (including Collaborative Quilts, Group Quilts or Community Quilts).

8) Youth Quilts
a) Age up to 13 years (Age as on 1st January in year of competition.)
• No side shorter than 30cm and no side longer than 100cm.
• Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
• All work done on the quilt must be entirely the entrant’s own work.
• They can either use their own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain or a published/commercial pattern. In the latter case design credits must be given and the quilt entry must be accompanied by an A4 colour photocopy. No kits are allowed.
• The name of the mentor, if any, must be stated on the entry form.
b) Age 14-18 years (Age as on 1st January in year of competition.)
• No side shorter than 30cm and no side longer than 150cm.
• Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
• All work done on the quilt must be entirely the entrant’s own work.
• They can either use their own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain or a published/commercial pattern. In the latter case design credits must be given and the quilt entry must be accompanied by a photo or A4 colour photocopy. No kits are allowed.
• The name of the mentor, if any, must be stated on the entry form.

9) Miniature Quilts
• No side longer than 60cm or with a block/unit side no longer than 10cm.
• Quilts that are miniature in size and proportion and/or a scaled-down version of a regular-sized quilt.
