The Bed Quilts and Wall Quilts categories have two entry levels, Masters for entrants who have received Master Class Quilter status from SAQG and Standard for all the other entrants.

  • No side shorter than 150cm and no side longer than 250cm.
  • Pieced bed quilts that are constructed using traditional techniques and materials and have a conventional edge finish (no raw edges).
  • The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern.
  • Whole-cloth bed quilts should be entered in this category.

Standard and Masters entry levels.

  • No side shorter than 150cm and no side longer than 250cm.
  • Appliquéd quilts, with or without piecing, that are constructed using traditional techniques and materials and have a conventional edge finish (no raw edges).
  • The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern.

  • No side longer than 200cm.
  • Quilts that are a depiction/representation of (a) person(s), (a) place(s) and /or (a) thing(s). The representation can be realistic or stylised. Any technique(s) can be used.
  • The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern.

  • No side longer than 200cm.
  • Quilts composed predominantly of organic shapes. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
  • The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern.

  • Quilts composed predominantly of geometric shapes. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
  • The quilt must be your own design or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work or made from a commercial quilt pattern.

  • No side longer than 200cm.
  • Quilts that are made of fibre/cloth where the composition tends to be abstract.  Any technique(s) and materials can be used. It must include some quilting through three layers.
  • The quilt must be your own design.

  • No side longer than 250cm
  • The Open category provides a place for quilts that do not fit in the other categories. The quilts must not violate copyright laws. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
  • The following quilts can be entered:
  1. Quilts constructed and quilted by an individual AND
    • made using a published/commercial pattern (including so called “Modern” quilts) or designed by another individual for you or
    • made using computer-digitized quilting and/or machine embroidery patterns or
    • have been started in a class or
    • be a replica of an antique quilt (made approximately before 1960) or
    • made from non-quilted traditional techniques (Yo-yo’s, Cathedral Window etc).
  2. Collaborative Quilts - any quilt that is constructed (pieced, appliquéd, quilted, embellished or finished) by two or three individuals.
  • No side longer than 250cm.
  • Quilts made by 4 or more actively-involved people. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
  • Group quilts must be a design of one or more of the group members, or a design derived from using elements from the public domain. It cannot be a copy of another quilt/art work.

  • No side longer than 60cm or block side longer than 10cm.
  • Quilts that are a scaled-down version (in proportion) of a regular-sized quilt.
  • No side longer than 200cm.
  • Quilts in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns. The main concern of these works will be to make a statement: The visual communication of a strong viewpoint gets priority above the “beauty” of the surface. The originality and the thought-provoking manner in which the medium has been used, should come into play. Any technique or combination of techniques can be used.
